Spray Foam - SPF Case Study

The SPFA did a study on the Environmental Impact of our insulation choices (Demand a Better Insulation).

At some point during the 75-year insulation service life, the environmental impact line from SPF will cross the environmental impact line of fiberglass. The time (in years) at which this intersection occurs is referred to as the “environmental recovery period”. Beyond this environmental recovery period, the use of SPF insulation will have a greater positive environmental impact for the building when compared to fiberglass insulation.

In the study they highlight two example homes with matching spray foam R-Value that show they “payback point” of switching to spray foam:

  1. Houston, TX (warmer temperatures – estimated environmental impact at 7 years)
  2. Minneapolis, MN (cooler temperatures – estimated environmental impact at 8 years)
