PFAS-Free Foam Systems: FSI Is Leading the Transition in the EU Market
As the European Union advances restrictions on PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances), polyurethane foam manufacturers are preparing for major changes. At FSI, this transition is already complete. Our foam systems are fully PFAS-free, offering European industries a trusted, compliant alternative that does not compromise performance.
For over a decade, FSI has engineered PU systems around Ecomate®, our proprietary, environmentally responsible blowing agent. This forward-thinking chemistry allows customers to stay ahead of regulations while maintaining the quality and reliability their applications demand.
PFAS in Polyurethane Foam: A Growing Concern
PFAS have historically been used in polyurethane foam formulations to improve cell structure, enhance fire performance, and increase chemical stability. These chemicals are often found in surfactants, additives, and legacy blowing agents. While effective, PFAS are also persistent, bioaccumulate, and are linked to a range of environmental and health risks.
When used in PU foam, PFAS can leach during the product’s lifecycle or release during manufacturing and disposal. This is especially concerning for foam used in high-contact or sensitive applications.
The EU is prioritizing PFAS in polyurethane as part of its broader strategy to eliminate harmful substances from consumer and industrial products.
Our PFAS-free foam systems are trusted across a wide range of polyurethane industries, including:
- Cold Chain and Appliance Insulation
-
Architectural Panels and Commercial Insulation
-
Flotation Foam for Marine and Offshore Equipment
-
Void Filling and Structural Support for Geotechnical Applications
-
Integral Skin Foam
Each of these sectors faces increasing regulatory pressure regarding chemical content and environmental impact. FSI provides solutions that are already aligned with where the EU is headed.
What the New EU PFAS Regulations Mean for Foam Applications
Several EU and member-state regulations will directly impact foam manufacturers:
- January 2026: PFAS limits in drinking water come into force under the EU Drinking Water Directive
- August 2026: PFAS restrictions apply to food-contact packaging under the Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR)
- 2026 to 2027: EU REACH restriction on PFAS is expected to enter into force, following review of the Annex XV proposal
- France: National ban on PFAS in cosmetics and textiles begins in January 2026, with broader bans extending to all textiles by 2030
These restrictions will affect upstream and downstream suppliers, including insulation and appliance OEMs, infrastructure contractors, and specialty foam manufacturers.
FSI Foam Systems Are Already Compliant
Our Ecomate®-based polyurethane systems are designed for long-term sustainability and performance:
- 100% PFAS-free
- Zero GWP
- Zero ODP
- VOC-exempt
- SNAP-approved by the U.S. EPA
These systems are proven in real-world manufacturing environments and are currently used in over 30 countries. With support from our technical service team and customizable formulations, FSI helps European customers meet project-specific goals while staying ahead of compliance deadlines.
